Weightlifting

In this room within the main ELF building are a number of weights of increasing sizes. Normally some of these would be unliftable, even by Agent standards, but on the moon things only weigh 16.7% of their earth weights which significantly augments the mass the competitors can lift, even if the weights are the same.

System:

For each attempt competitors roll Strength + Athletics with a penalty based on the size of the weight to be attempted which is abstracted as being between -1 and -10. Weightlifters are allowed six attempts in total regardless of success, although these can be of different weights. The penalties for the top two successful attempts are added together to give the competitors overall score. Highest (technically lowest) score wins. In case of a tie the person who successfully lifted the heaviest single weight wins. If that is also a tie then the person who lifted first wins.

All rolls must be made in ascending order of weight, with the lower weight, and thus lower penalty, being rolled first. After each failed roll a competitor may choose to try again at that weight, or advance to a higher weight. On a successful roll the competitor must advance to a higher weight unless they are already at the highest in which case they must attempt that one again. A weightlifter may not choose to return to a lower weight, and lower penalty, if that competitor has already advanced to a higher weight.

In order to reduce an element of unfair tactical play would all competitors please roll their first 3 attempts in their first post and wait until other competitors have posted before attempting their last 3 lifts.

Telekinesis:

Because things weigh less on the moon the mass of the weights is considerably larger than it would be on earth. Telekinesis works off mass and not weight thus it is much less effective on the moon than it otherwise would be. Due to the abstracted nature of the weights I'm going to say that you can use Telekinesis in place of either Strength or Athletics in the system above, depending on if you are using TK to lift instead of using your muscles or you are augmenting your strength with TK to make up for a lack of technique.

Darya headed towards the medium area of the weight range, deciding to start with the mass right in the middle. (-5 penalty) She knew that she would most likely not win this event, with her lack of cyberlimbs and average strength, but she could at least try. Kneeling down, she lifted sharply and surprisingly found it cam up fairly easily in her hands. [Roll under 6, rolled a 3, XS 5].

Feeling good about this, she moved one up, to the next weight (-6), and again attempted to lift it. This time it was just too heavy for her, and she failed. [Roll under 5, rolled 15, fail by 8]

Trying again, she lifted sharply and just managed to hold the weight off the ground, but not enough to actually count.. [Roll under 5, rolled 7, fail]

Cobra was quite confident about her lifting ability - if nowhere else, she should do well here. She stepped up to a moderately heavy (-4) weight and lifted it with great ease, to the point that she wondered if she'd chosen too conservatively. [Target 10 (14-4), rolled 2, XS 8]

She moved to the next weight up (-5), kneeled in postion, and... nope, she couldn't get it up all the way. Hopefully it was just a matter of technique - she hadn't gone into any of these events hoping to win, but it would be nice if she could impress someone, perhaps herself. [Target 9 (14-5), rolled 12, fail by 3] She stepped back, stretched a little, repositioned herself, but didn't manage any better. [Rolled 12 again] This was quite disappointing for Cobra, who'd always thought of this kind of lifting as a thing she could do, even if she wasn't the best at it. Perhaps that first lift was just a fluke...

Madge giggled a little as the others picked weights. She wasn't as strong as Darya or Cobra, but in space, well.. maybe she'd do okay. She picked to the -4 weight to mimic her WF friend.. And went staggering backwards as she managed to lift one side of it and only one side. (AT 5, rolled 17.) She dropped it with a nearly hysterical peal of laughter, and went for one about half the size (-2). (AT 7, Rolled a 20. Critical failure, baby!) This one she was able to lift off the ground, and it raised easily.. and smacked her in the face before falling to the ground. "...Oh." She rubbed her nose, a little shocked to find it bloody. She excused herself to go wipe it away.

Soberly and a few minutes later, Jor went to the -1 weight. This one was easier to lift, sure, but cautiousness caused her to give up as her arm trembled as she raised it. (AT 8, fail by 3.) She dropped the weight and wiped her palms together. "I'm really not good at this.."

Parvati stood calmly and quietly surveyed the Weights for a long moment before she did anything. She calmly whispered a prayer as she steps up. She picked one of the lesser weights and carefully focused channeling her Telekinesis to grant her the extra strength to get the weight up. (TK+Str: 9 -2: rolled a 4, XS: 3). After she carefully lets it down she pauses and takes a deep drink of water before she moved on.

She moved to the next weight up and considered it for a long moment taking her time to focus and lift it carefully. (TK+Str: 9 -3: rolled a 7 fail by 1) And while she got it up her grip slipped before she got it over her head and it slipped out of her hands crashing to the floor. Jumping back Parvati takes a deep breath and sits down for a few minutes before standing up for her final attempt.

She Considers for a long moment, does she try again or does she risk it and try for the harder difficulty, eventually deciding that since she was here she might as well give it a try. Leaning into it she whispers a prayer to Vishnu and an invocation of the Pandu's before straining into the lift. (TK+Str: 9 -4 rolled: 3, XS: 2). She lifted it head woozy but she held it for the required time before dropping it back to the ground with a thud, and sitting down quite hard herself.

Ace had chosen to go near the end for this competition. Barring any late entries he was the last to attempt the lifting, as he set up the competition. He felt this was fair, while he might have the advantage of knowing how his teammates were doing the rules were such that he was guaranteed to lose if it came to a tie. He watched his fellow competitors trying their best and saw just how difficult everything seemed to be. None of them were actually trained weight lifters, with the possible exception of Cobra, and the technique seemed to be letting people down.

Special mention was made of Marjorie's turn where after failing to lift a weight she went to get a smaller one. Ace was about to call out to her about the rules contravention when it hit her in the face, drawing blood. Talk of the rules was removed totally from his mind as he moved quickly to see if she was ok and helped lead her off to recover.
He watched with interest as Parvati showed complete and graceful poise in her lifting, even when she couldn't manage it.

Finally it was his turn and he took up his position. (AT7, Roll 14) He took his grip and attempted to lift the weight but no sooner had it lifted off the ground than it slipped through Ace's fingers. This was not a good start. It might have only lifted a few inches up but it still counted so Ace reached down and tried again. (AT7, Roll 8). This time he got it off the ground and up into the air. His technique was good, but not flawless and before he could hold it for long enough to prove he had succeeded it slipped from his grasp once again. Slightly frustrated Ace reconsidered his options. He was committed to -4 or better now and had fluffed two attempts. He was very close to managing this weight, and decided that tactically it would be a better move to stay where he was. He tried one more time to lift the weight (AT7, Roll 10) but he didn't even get it above his head before it came crashing to the ground. Disappointed Ace stepped aside, ready for another competitor.
