Week 87, Pre-pre-Trial: On The Road Again

Post  Hugo on Tue Jul 15, 2014 8:41 pm

In the ride to The Hague, the conversation between Coraline and Hugo had waned considerably. The nuke was driving and Coraline, spread out over the passenger and back seat, was poking at the elegant and dangerous pursuit bot in the back. Everything might be okay, which was... More of a relief than Hugo had been anticipating. Depersonalization was okay, maybe, if you were some prestige slave of a nobleman, but being treated like a 'thing' was a worrying idea. One he hadn't liked at all. Which reminded him... He opened a private channel to Fenris, "How's Leto doing over there, Fenrir?"

As Silvia drove away from the radioactive crater that was Orion HQ, Fenris breathed a sigh of relief, she didn't want to anyone else get depersonalized, not like... Not like Andrin... She was pulled out of her reverie when Hugo spoke up over the smeaker, and as he asked after the liberated AI Fenris glanced down to the box containing it, plugging in to check up. It's fine as far as I can tell, but I can't say for sure given what they did to it. I'm sure it'll be in a good enough state to get your witness statement, so don't worry. There was however, another concern. she had do ask, and did so carefully, not entirely sure how the Nuke would take it.Hugo? What is going to happen to the AI after the trial? It's... It's sapient. And it doesn't have a kill switch, and that, well that's just asking for trouble...

"Um, I think the lawyers said they could make a like, hard kill switch? Like an exploding capacitor that would make it not illegal. I wouldn't mind taking him, but it's up for the courts to decide who owns him, I think." Hugo was not a computer guru, or even a computer novice, but strapping a grenade to something made sense.

Fenris relaxed, Hugo mentioned some AI friend, and she had been worried that he would try to release Leto or something like that, but the courts should do whats right, in theory. Well that's good at least, it'll be dealt with properly then.

Hugo gave a glance to Coraline before focusing back on the road. Going into Frieburg, traffic was slowing as the explosion made its way across the sky, but they were moving away at a fair clip. "I think the little guy is harmless. Can't do anything in the box." It was a good point, he thought.

And it was. True enough, it can't do anything inside a box, but AI's can be... Unpredictable, when they start thinking for themselves. So you need to take precautions. And it can't exactly testify as it is. Fenris was kind of surprised no-one was trying to stop traffic leaving the area, but if they were going to get away easily, then that was fine by her.

"See if the box has a mic. And really, everyone is dangerous when they think for themselves. Robots or meat people. Why do you think the corporations try to control what we think? They don't want us to get independent thought, yeah?" Conspiratorial Hugo was in a good mood, but his sincerity was clear even over smeaker.

That's different though. People don't seem to be as trigger happy with the nukes when they have free will. Do you think they knew how crazy that AI was? Why would anyone give something like that control of that many D-cells? It's just asking for a radioactive crater! Fenris gave the box a quick check. And no, this thing doesn't have a speaker yet.

"AIs didn't make the D-shift, though. AIs didn't make the bombs or war for like, hundreds of years or whatever. And the AI in the base was installed by people. I don't think the poor bastards can change how they're programmed, and we can and we're still way more terrible. And Sakura is pretty nice. She'd never blow us up." He ended his quick rant with some warmth; Hugo liked the house AI and even bought one to take care of the baby.
