Mid Week 82: Concerns

Shortly after Silvia left, Fenris was on her phone. If she couldn't make Silvia listen to reason, maybe Hugo could. "Hugo, have you talked to Silvia since the mission? I'm worried. She seemed so eager to die for Oracle, I just... don't know what to do. Can you talk to her? Make her see sense?" It was clear she wasn't coping with this very well.

Hugo was shocked to see Fenris was calling him; he wasn't sure how they were after the whole Dani debacle, but he answered the phone regardless. He reach across his desk at work and began to play with one of the bright colored toys that lined up along the edge. "...Yeah, I already played that game, Fenrir. She only cares about the corp. It's like.. ..It's like we're from different worlds. You know she asked if we wanted to break up because I was leaving?"

There was disbelief in his voice, obvious down the phone.

"Really? What the fuck has gotten into her? She was not like this when we were going after the cyberlins! Or... I didn't see it." She curled up, resting her head in her hand. "Fuck! I really thought you would be able to get through to her, you know? I mean, if not you, then who?" Fenris let out a frustrated groan. "I can't be there all the time, and now that you're gone, who's going to make sure Silvia doesn't do something fucking stupid? Tansai and Shinobu left, and Coraline's fuck knows where! What the fuck do we do Hugo?"

"Coraline's in Taiwan still," Hugo added as Fenris spoke, but by the time she finished his voice was back to its normal volume. "Well, she won't leave Oracle and... I dunno. I mean, in her defense, it's not as if I don't do more dangerous things, you know?" He spun the bright toy in his hands, and he sighed. "It's the only time she seems to feel alive, when she's about to die. You notice that?"

"Danger is fun, I get it, I'm an adrenaline junkie, an element of risk makes almost everything better. But charging a Ranger when you have eight Malenbrach closing in? That's taking it a bit far."By the end Fenris just sounded worn down. She'd just had this argument, and didn't have the energy to go over it again.

But of course, Silvia wasn't her only friend in danger of imminent death, Hugo was on trial for murder. "Um, how are things going with the lawyers? Can I help? At least tell me this isn't happening in the Bank, right?" She could really use some good news, but was nowhere near naive enough to actually expect it, not anymore.

"Nah nah, it'll be around Eden Spire, I think. I got some good lawyers, but I think I need to break into a place to check a thing. But I don't know about it yet. Eh, I got time." Hugo was casual in the face of death, as always, and he continued playing with the toys on his desk. There was a little Malenbrach APC, and he pushed it over a few other toys with every visible sign of delight. "And Silvia's.. ..She likes danger, and she feels like she owes Oracle everything. She would rather die for them than..." His voice slowly stilled, and Fenris could here him thinking over the phone. Eventually he sighed deeply, and almost audibly shrugged. "I don't know what else to, you know? Except try not to get depersonalized for murder."

"You're not the only one... I just..." No. No, she wasn't going to get into it again. Fenris took a deep breath and moved on to an entirely different source of stress. "But please, just let me know if there's something I can actually do. I don't really know how to help. I mean, you know what I'm good at, and it's not legal stuff." She hated being so powerless to do anything, and she knew first hand what the repercussions of depersonalization could be...

"Well, in a couple weeks, we'll need to break into some company to look at their AI data. They're hiding something, but, eh. I don't have any information on it yet." He didn't sound very bothered at all, as if he was talking about the weather or waiting for a package in the mail. "I'll figure it out. I got plenty of people working on the case."

Now that was something Fenris could definitely do. "Just, let me know when you have enough to move on." She sounded relieved, she now had some way of helping, of stopping people from dying. Or at least stopping Hugo from dying, she was still at a loss with regards to everyone else.
