IC/OOC formatting

Post  Stephen Lincoln on Tue Jul 02, 2013 12:20 am

There doesn't seem to be an established standard for this and I've already run into ambiguity over whether a post was IC causing some misunderstanding, so ITT I will tell you how I am going to delineate my OOC chatter in forums where it may be ambiguous and how to do it yourself so we can all be on the same page about it.
I'm going to be putting OOC text into a spoiler box which you can expand by clicking on it in the post, like so:
Spoiler:
Congratulations, you can follow simple instructions!
More specifically, I'm going to be putting it into a named spoiler box, like so:
OOC:
Now I'm double out-of-character. Let's hope the universe can handle this meta.
To achieve this, use the following formatting:
Code:
[spoiler="OOC"]Say things you'd never say[/spoiler]
I'm not going to run around demanding everyone does this but it's a pretty clear way to indicate when something is OOC if the need arises and it tucks such content away neatly so it doesn't in-character posts by being all big and glaringly obvious, so obviously I think it's good practice.

Carry on.

This is awesome but please for the love of fuck don't do it in a strictly IC thread unless you really need to.

Yeah, I don't plan on having to do it often, but if there is some pressing reason one might need to make an OOC comment it both keeps it separate and also keeps it hidden so you do as little harm as possible to the aesthetic flow of the whole arrangement.

Before now I have always used double parenthesis. If no-one minds I'd rather carry on doing that, given it is fewer keystrokes and easier to do on my phone.

((Something like this)) or ((OOC: this might also work))

Which has always been fairly clear during IC threads. (Also, There was no ambiguity. I deliberately responded IC to what was clearly an OOC post. Because I could.)

I see your point about being clear though. Whatever works for you.
