Mainframe Systems Empty Mainframe Systems

Post  Admin Wed Feb 08, 2012 3:21 am

Mainframes are large computers that can be found in many businesses and Corporate locations. They grant bonuses to all computer based rolls, including hacking, scientific research and A.I programming. Mainframes can also be equipped with 'modules', which are small computers themselves that increase the mainframe's capabilities in specific tasks. Large mainframes are needed to harness the power of these special devices more than one at a time.
Their bonuses do not stack with the neural jack, though they can be used with one.
The power requirements of these systems can be enormous, and so they are very difficult to hide unless you buy industrial generators.

Computers from the Core book
Work station: 4000 gives +2 to all computer based rolls.
Hackers Laptop: 4000 gives +2 to hacking rolls only
Neural Jack: 25,000 gives +4 to Hacking rolls

New stand alone computers and mainframes

((OOC: Please note that these are untested at the moment, so I reserve the right to change things around and play with the whole thing without warning ))

Domestic computer: 500 credits to buy (no bonus to rolls)

Basic mainframe: 50,000 gives +4 to all computer based rolls. Can be fitted with one 'Module'. This mainframe is about the size of a car and can fit inside a truck or shipping container. Commonly used for business databases and sales systems.

Data Centre mainframe: 250,000 gives +4 to all computer based rolls. Has 2 module ports. This mainframe takes up a large room and requires a powerful cooling system. Used in data centres and local corporate operations. Ideal for security systems for important bases.

Research Mainframe: 6,000,000 gives +4 to all computer based rolls. Has 4 module ports. Used in research facilities and to manage extremely large databases. A research mainframe must be housed in a specially constructed facility and is about the size of a house or larger.

Modules
Module ports allow you to install modules. Modules are specialised task computers that give a mainframe the power to run very specialist software. These modules stack, so a specialised mainframe can be incredibly powerful. Modules take a downtime action to fit, so swapping modules often is a time consuming task. I have not listen a basic price for these units because each module is a custom design and will require commissioning. The most common supplier of module systems is Datanetica.

A.I module: Allows an A.I of any level to reside in the mainframe. If multiple A.Is are being housed in a single A.I module then their combined A.I level cannot exceed 25. A.Is can transfer back and forth from the module to another suitable location, such as a robot body that has the necessary circuits for sentience. This feature is usually used to upload an A.I from its body for training or upgrading and then return.

Database module: Used on dedicated database mainframes. A quantum computer allows the mainframe to work much faster when dealing with large indexes and information searches. Grants a +4 bonus to all data trawling rolls.

Hacking Module (illegal): These are very rare and difficult to find. They grant another +2 bonus to hacking, stacking with the bonus from the Advanced Hacking Software and with other hacking modules.

Research module: Gives a +3 bonus to science rolls that use the mainframe. A suite of analysis tools allow a programmer or scientist to perform incredible feats of data analysis and experimental coordination if the mainframe is connected to lab equipment.

Threat Analysis module: Enhances any security systems under mainframe control. Turrets and robots gain a +2 to their AT for firing and all monitoring systems gain a +4 to spot intruders or suspicious activity.
