Chapter 0: The Waiting Room - Page 3 Empty Re: Chapter 0: The Waiting Room

"Not a thing, but no-one here is from a major Corp, so maybe they won't be either?" Voja made his way over to one of the sofas, placing Jonnochka on the floor, and reaching into the bag that was slung across his back. "Oh, and Legal asked me to give you all these." The huge Russian made his way round the group handing out contract PDAs*. "They said it's just a standard NDA for Jonnochka."

*The devices are a PDA with a document, combined with a chip scanner and a microphone, so you can sign it. The main points of the document are:

1. Jonnochka and its design are the property of the Richenbacher Corporation.
2. No details about the above can be given to any third party without permission from the Richenbacher Legal Department, before the weapon is released for public sale.
3. You, and by extension your Corporation, will be held accountable for any loss of profit due to a breach of the points above.

The actual thing will be longer, with a lot more legalease, but that is the gist of it.

"I have no idea who else is coming. Maybe someone to compliment our skills?" Lester scanned the documents, seeming at ease with the feel and handle of a contract PDA. He even used his fingers while holding his coffee in his hand with ease. After a few scanning swipes and presses, he spoke his name softly and scanned his chip while holding his thumb to the screen. He handed the PDA back. "Is a prototype really the safest weapon to bring on this mission, Voja?"

Vojislav smiled. "Sure it is! She's a fine weapon! And is built to punch through armour. How is that not useful against droids?" He took the contract and shoved it back into his bag, as he went over to get his own coffee, whatever Lester had smelled good. "Besides, you can't do a proper field test without a strong enemy to test your weapon on, can you? It's why I take so many UIG bounties."

Corva took the contract and read through it with a slightly confused look on their face. Everything belonged to Aldiek rightfully in their mind, and it wasn't that hard to work out the weapon's details (they made a note to obtain more detailed schematics at some point). Still, they were, currently, under the laws of the surface, and so they deigned to copy the actions of Lester and sign the contract, as if a contract under the laws of the Archons was worth anything.

[Pass Intelligence + Corp. Knowledge by 5]

Richenbacher's legal team had made a fairly iron clad contract here and Amp did Vajo the courtesy of reading through the document in its entirety. Fortunately this was her profession so it didn't take her very long. "Voja, sweetheart, I know your corporation spent a long time on this document but there are well, I'm afraid I've got to get into specifics here," While Amp cleared her throat Prince rolled his fucking eyes.

"This contract is riddled with no less than seven major spelling errors. Errors which go far beyond mere pedantry and threaten to throw the meaning of entire paragraphs into question. Page two, line twenty five, page twenty seven, subsection b, line five and three more on the last page, no less. Each could be the proverbial, ahah, plasma spanner in the works, should it ever come to court."

Amp handed the pda back to Voja with a little flourish, "Fortunately, as I'm a diplomat we're both spared the embarrassment of my signing this document." The lawyer wiped her hands of the digital document, a little smile on her face.

Vojislav's face darkened. Richenbacher wouldn't send him here with shit legal documents, and he didn't like this woman saying they were all incompetent. "You are a terrible diplomat." He unconsciously straightened up until he towered over the Iyo Agent, pushing the contract back into her hand.  "We will discuss this with Colonel Lazard." From the tone of his voice, Voja did not consider this optional.

Almost in unison with Amp and Vojislav's minor confrontation, a stench of oil, sweat, singed clothing, and blood, assaulted their nostrils as the last member of their little party strode through the door from the teleporter corridor.  Not concerning himself with what he presumed to be his new teammates' stares, James calmly walked across the room to the nearest chair, placing a slightly lumpy backpack down onto it.  From this angle, the sheath and grip of a longsword could be clearly seen strapped across James' back.  To those of a perceptive variety, what could be seen of the sword was of an extremely high quality.

As he looked around the room to gather his bearings, the other agents could see that he must have been medpacked very recently, since he appeared to lack the injuries that his clothing described.  Turning towards the group, the mask of his combat helmet inscrutable, he spoke in an even, slightly cold, muffled voice, "So, would I be correct in the assumption that you are all members of this new anti-DLA taskforce?"

Reaching up, James confidently unstrapped and peeled off the combat helmet and reinforced hood, letting his blonde hair fall loose, and revealing his slightly pale, smooth face.  He looked to be somewhere in his mid 30s, with a mildly appraising expression as he looked the other agents over.  A small smile that did not extend to his eyes split his face as he stepped forward and stretched out a hand.  "James Fletcher, EI Employment Termination Specialist.  A pleasure to meet you all."

Corva ignored the hand, but responded quietly. "Corva."

They stood up, still sipping from the bottle of coffee, and walked over to the vending machine. After a moment of fiddling (they still seemed to struggle with using their chip), they waited while the machine spat out product after product, until 300 credits worth had dropped. Scooping it all up, they returned to their place between the chairs, stacking the food neatly in front of them and beginning to systematically read the ingredients lists.

While no lawyer, Zushe had signed innumerable contracts and had got quite adept at reading them. He skimmed through Voja's document with a practiced eye (pass Int+CK by 5), making sure that he familiarised himself with the relevant terms. Not that he planned to try and do anything with Jonnachka, but just in case. Using the private smeaker channel to Amparo from years ago that he hoped still worked, he smeakered Amparo? This isn't worth making a fuss over, is it?

As the last Agent made his way through the door, he watched him closely. He instantly had him down as the enforcement type - competent, ruthless, loyal to his corp. He stepped forward, taking the proffered hand.

"Huang Zushe, COO of Simha Shipping. Pleasure to meet you too. We are indeed the anti-DLA taskforce. This is Lester Buttercream, of Multymeat, Amparo Okawa, of Iyo, and Vojislav, of Richenbacher." He conspicuously did not mention the strange woman staring at product cartons.

"Ahah," Amp wasn't intimidated at all by Voja's reaction, if anything her expression indicated that she found it kind of cute. "My apologies, Voja, I meant that it would be embarrassing for me if I hadn't noticed. And there is no need to take it so personally, these sorts of errors happen on a daily basis, to even the best of us." Of course Amp was talking about herself here and if anyone didn't get the message there was Prince behind her doing the sitcom 'amused exasperation' emote.

"Human error," she added by way of explanation, resolutely not taking the pda even as it was insistently thrust towards her. "If I were you," and for the first time Amp's voice turned from jovial to serious, "I would take the advice kindly offered to you, expense free, by a third party legal expert, I might add. Return the document to your legal team who will be able to efficiently eliminate those errors." She took a step back from the huge man not because she was intimidated but because she was in control and headed over towards the newcomer.

"I'm sure the colonel will have things to say Voja," she said, indicating that she expected the man to follow her, "But ultimately, if one of us - or anyone we meet for that matter - doesn't sign the contract, the onus is on you, the employee, not to use Jonnochka." She shrugged genially, as if to say, thats corporations for you placing the blame as far down the totem pole as they can.

"Finally, sweetheart," she added, placing a sympathetic hand on Voja's arm, "Casting personal aspersions won't serve you well, period. Consider that, as we move forward with the project." It was only now that Amp fully turned her attention to their new arrival, looking the man up and down with a practised assessment.

"You would indeed," The lawyer took the EI agent's hand, shook it firmly and replied, "Captain Amparo Okawa, law & order for Iyo, as you might have guessed, " Amp laughed entirely insincerely about her contractual 'dispute' with Voja. "Amp is fine and the pleasure is mine."

She took this opportunity to reply to Zushe, while her back was to Voja. The diplomat was quite surprised their smeaker frequency hadn't been assigned to something else by now "I'm not the one making the fuss but, unfortunately Iyo would be implicated were anything untoward to occur." She did shoot him a glance though, as they were now side by side. Some part of her didn't really appreciate having her introduction upstaged but her mind was in a lot of different places right now, there was only so much you could do.

Lester only offered a nod initially. He'd taken a handshake for the team with Voja, and being part of the Freestate, well... He was a Multymeat boy, through and through, and the EI were the largest consumers of their high end range of foods, their Reale Foode range, and showed the most expansion for new products. Besides, EI facilities always wanted to show off their high grade inspections and they were always so fun, even if said facilities didn't pass the grade. Especially if they didn't.

"Lester Buttercream, Registered AAA Grade MultyMeat Health Inspector." His full title wasn't meant to impress, but it was the second highest grade one could be, as a health inspector. Of course, there were only three AAA+ inspectors. Not that many people would know this, but given the cohort here... He turned his head to Corva, watching them. "Surely you've had a conana before?" His voice was more gentle than indignant.

Corva shook their head, still not taking their eyes off of the packaging. It was important to determine if any of the ingredients would interact badly with their biology, but it also acted as a distraction for them. If a psychologist was in the room, they may describe this behaviour as stimming.

They put the conana bar to one side, in a growing pile of snacks they had read but not opened. They didn't seem particularly interested in eating them, just reading the information on the side.

Chapter 0: The Waiting Room - Page 3 Empty Re: Chapter 0: The Waiting Room

After a moment, Lester took a step closer to the machine and said softly, "Corva, if you want to check for a specific ingredient, you can use the console on the machine. Like this." The curly haired man, in a relaxed way, poked the screen a few times to bring up the ingredients main screen, and poked on the glass above each item to have it display ingredients. "If there are any you don't want, I can give you a refund?"

Lester was a MultyMeat man. He spent most of his life on the business side of the food industry, but he had met the vat farmers. Hell, a few of the best years of his young life were when his mother had been manager of the Very Large Vat Field in Puerto Natales, and he had spent time with the Vat farmers and their families. These were people who spent their whole existence living below and between massive metal vats, where whole families helped to clean surfaces, move slurries, maintain the building, study the complicated science, no, art, of feeding the world with bacterial precipitate. Some of them had been there for five or more generations, engaging in complicated breeding to avoid the worst of the genetic anomalies, passing down secrets and priding themselves on the fecundity of their algael production. They had their own foods based off of pre-produciton run off, grew molds and mosses and fermented fine wines. They spoke a scientific pigeon, didn't socialize well outside of other vat groups and their small towns, their children learned the importance of science and their greater goal of providing a world with food that they would never see and might never have interest in. MultyMeat adored them, for a lot of reasons, but they asked for very little in terms of money and were good at what they did. And Corva reminded him of them. "You can also search by allergens, if that's a concern." He tapped a few more buttons.

Chapter 0: The Waiting Room - Page 3 Empty Re: Chapter 0: The Waiting Room

Post  James Fletcher Mon Oct 03, 2016 7:12 pm

Unperturbed by Corva's seeming dismissal, James silently accepted Zushe's, Amp's and Lester's introductions, offering a polite nod towards the other agents as they were pointed out to him.  "Good.  Mistaken identity in my line of work can lead to... embarassing situations."  The cold smile did not falter.

"A pleasure to meet you all." he stated.  "My apologies for my current appearance," he added, with the barest hint of actual sincerity, "there was a minor skirmish underway at the Berlin teleport station when I arrived; a DLA droid squad was attempting to assault my UIG escort."  Looking down at his armour, James attempted to brush off a small amount of soot, smearing grease on his hands as he did so.  Frowning slightly, he continued, "Thankfully, the droids were no match for a close quarters combat counteroffensive combined with UIG fire support."

Wiping his hands off on one of the cleaner patches of his gear, James turned to watch as Lester assisted Corva at the vending machine, displaying a bemused expression.  "Who's the young quiet one?  Which corp is she with?" he asked, turning back towards Amp and Zushe.
