Nanotech Details Empty Nanotech Details

Nanotechnology is not expanded on considerably in the books, so I am going to have to make up some details and systems for using, repairing and modifying it. Feel free to comment, since this is all very much untested at the moment.

Types of nanotech
(1) Nanite built tech - Equipment such as naninium plates that have been constructed using nanites in a nano-forge. These objects no longer have active nanites inside them, making them very safe to implant and use in general. You do not require a nanotechnology license to use or carry this equipment.

(2) Active Specialised Nanites - Some nanites are kept active and stored in preparation for performing an extremely specific task. Examples of this include rebuilding a specific piece of damaged equipment or healing a certain type of cell in the body. These nanites are allowed to be used by the general public because they have been carefully inspected by UIG experts. The nanites cannot be reprogrammed to perform other tasks. However, a nano-tool kit can make small adjustments to a collection of these specialised nanites, such as changing the colour of something when it is rebuilt by them. This can allow an experienced user to make an intelligence + mechtronics roll to optimise some nanites for a situation. For example, by programming a nano-pick with some extra information about a specific lock it can be made even more effective. You require a nano-tech license to use these devices.

(3) Active Programmable Nanites - These are only legal inside certified and inspected nano-forges. These nanites can be programmed and controlled to behave in almost anyway using powerful computers and EM-waves. A nano-tool kit is not enough on its own to control such nanites, but it is possible to jury rig something together in a pinch using an agent's internal AI, an EMP or Laser weapon, a nano-tool kit and a lot of luck. These nanites are what form the nano-swarms detailed in EB, pg 112. If you are able to acquire some of these nanites you may be able to control them to create your own technologies or provide some kind of amazing functionality, like healing or hurting things. The trick is knowing how to control them.

Nano-forges
Complex arrays of EM-generators can control billions of nanites in order to slowly build amazing pieces of technology. There are very few companies capable of building these advanced pieces of technology, with the clear market leader being...
Currently the only way to legally acquire a nano-forge is to buy it from a company that will program it with the object you wish to build with it. The forge will be regularly inspected to ensure you have not changed this configuration, so its use is very limited. If you wish, it is possible to hack these devices and control the nanites in any way you wish, but this is usually grounds for huge rank point loss and depersonalization.
Nanoforges are loaded with a supply of programmable nanites by the company that manufactures them. Regular top-ups are needed, as nanites degrade over time, but such shipments are extremely secure.

Nanite-programmers
Desktop units that have the same EM-generators found in nano-forges, but on a much reduced scale. Nanite-programmers are not technically illegal. A nanite-programmer works on a very slow speed compared to a nano-forge and can only be used to reprogram active programmable nanites into new types of Active Specialised Nanites.
Nanite-programmers do not create their own programmable nanites, so they must be sourced from elsewhere. It is illegal to use programmable nanites in a nanite-programmer, except in very specialised situations such as part of a UIG-sanctioned university research project.
These devices allow dangerous nanites to be made, possibly making a nanite swarm or nanites capable of attacking living matter.

Finding programmable nanites
Programmable nanites are a very hot commodity on the black market. A canister of these illegal nanites can set you back many tens of thousands of credits. If you do not fancy buying them for extortionate amounts of credits, then you may be able to steal some from a working nano-forge, or hijack a shipment of them. Either way, it will be a tough job.
