Week 61: Cybernetics and you, 101
Coraline pulled her gloves off and disposed of them before surveying Oracle's cybernetics lab. Clean, tidy and sterile; just the way she liked it. The plague doctor knew that they wouldn't be using the lab for it's intended purpose today but old habits die hard. Ideally she would have a full lecture hall and a separate cybernetic surgery complete with observation room and had given such instruction before. As well as receiving it, the once. Fond times, even if the professor was a little preachy. But this was not a full cybernetics course nor the groundwork for one. Well, I suppose we'll see shan't we?
The surgery chair in the centre of the room was currently lying flat with a small black cube, a holo-projector, placed in the middle. Two fold out chairs had been placed on either side of the more fixed surgery chair. The circular room which contained it was lined with cabinet's and drawers with enough room between them and the operating table to work comfortably but no more. From them the parts of any imaginable piece of cyber surgery equipment could be drawn and quickly assembled. The drawers and cabinets were unbroken along the walls save for the door. The cabinets were placed above on head level, for someone a head taller than Coraline, with enough of a gap between them and the drawers to sit uncomfortably or work. The walls, floor, chair and storage were all clinical white and blue in striking contrast to Coraline's outfit. She wore a short black dress, a large buckle belt around her waist over a purple shirt with equally purple leggings.

Hugo was only a couple minutes late, dressed in his standard set of just-too-tight work out clothes with Una on his back. He seemed relaxed, his arm full of bags of fried food, their scent forecasting his arrival before he even opened the door. "I brought lunch! Sorry about being.. late..."
He trailed off as he took in the whole of the lab and the preparations Coraline had made. He looked to her and grinned, slightly confused. "...Is this.. for me?"

"Hugo, oh you darling man, lunch is perfect. Hm? Oh well yes, of course. It's a test. Take in as much about how the room was when you entered then you get to tell me what you remember at the end." Coraline grinned like a fox as she sat in one of the fold out chairs, indicating that Hugo should sit in the other. The operating chair between them would make a pretty good table and the plague doctor moved the little black box over to where someone would rest their head.
"Well, set the food out and we'll see what you brought. You've earned bonus points already for bringing food. You'll have noticed that you've needed to eat much more since becoming an agent and I'd wager that you since joined Oracle you've all but given up on table manners entirely dear. But what kinds of foods have you been craving? Or what has actually kept the hunger at bay?"

"Test?" The confusion in Hugo's voice was obvious, and he moved into the room cautiously. "I.. I thought we were just gonna talk about robots and stuff. You know, like, show me how they.. worked.." He trailed off, moving to the seat and dropping the food on the operating chair. The bags smelled heavily of meat. He looked Coraline over, in her bright clothes, and then glanced around the room. He was clearly puzzled.
He began to open the bags, still giving Coraline weird, almost intimidated works. "I just got burgers and fries, you know, big feddy agent stuff. It's a good place. I got a lot. And.. Mostly I eat a lot. That's what makes me full. Just.. a lot. Of stuff."

"Hugo sweetie, everything's fine. The 'test' was more teasing than anything else. And yes food with lots and lots of calories are what agents need. Cybernetics run off of your nutrition, not quite like your cells. Except for some of Gemini's catalog of course. Mainly though heat sinks and the like. Robotics more your thing? Alright then sweetie, where is the robot in this room?" Coraline looked calm and spoke conversationally, though Hugo could tell that she hadn't anticipated Hugo feeling uncomfortable. She seemed a little anxious about it but doing her best to save face.

Nothing like passing an Int+Robotics roll. Already. Somehow.
Hugo stared blankly at Coraline for a moment before looking around the room. His mouth opened. His mouth closed. He was reminded, once again, about the waking dream. He blinked. He shrugged and reached for the bag, pulling the food out. He smiled a little. "This is one of those trick questions, right? Like you said 'robot' but there are like, a dozen of them, right? Like.. computers and stuff. Not just like.. Centurians."
Feeling moderately confident in this answer (and comforted he wasn't going to be tested), Hugo began to unwrap a burger the size of his face.

".... I hadn't thought of that. Its good though, very astute. I don't think the computers count, but I can see an argument for... most cybernetics actually. You got the idea though." Coraline's eyes lost focus and a minute robot shimmered into the visible spectrum above her. It landed delicately on her hand and focused an array of sensor equipment on Hugo. The plague doctor seemed to come back to herself and she held the hornet aloft for her fellow agent to examine. "There easily could have been dozens of these in here. Tell me sweetie, what do you notice about it?"

Mouthful of burger, Hugo managed a slightly greasy smile. He wagged a finger at Coraline. "Sneaky! Hmm, mm. Eat your fries, they aren't as good cold." He was relaxing already, and his eyes looked over the little drone in her hand. He gave it a good look, but it mostly just looked like a drone to him. He even had one himself.
"It looks a like robot? Big eyes on that one. Little mechanical parts. Uh.. It's not bi?" He was kind of rambling a little now, obviously not knowing what answer she was looking for, but he had a burger and was amused at his own stupidity. He grabbed a handful of spiced fries.

Coraline took her fries, letting the hornet alight onto the chair come table. She nodded gratefully at Hugo and began to eat with every sign of enthusiasm. After swallowing the plague doctor continued "It isn't big for a robot but it is for a hornet. And it is for surveliance, you're right. Now they're not exactly common these days but it illustrates an important point. A lot of robotics is imitating evolution. Turns out that we can learn a lot from several billion years of natural selection. Which is why robotics and cybernetics are taught as one subject. In order to improve on one aspect, you have to understand how the other works" The former E.I. agent smiled at her droid come hornet as she continued to demolish the food Hugo had brought.

Hugo seemed more comfortable, nodding at the idea of cybernetics being linked to robots. "Good, that makes sense. I was wondering, you know, about the link. Cuz they seem different. Walking and flying things, and then like.. stuff you put in your body that interfaces with your brain." He grinned warmly, shoving the last section of massive burger into his mouth. He looked thoughtful as he reached for a bucket that contained some super sugary drink. "What I really want to know is.. how they work. How you turn them off, which bit makes them go, how they get broken with galvanic or EMP energy." He reached a hand back to pat the gun on his back. "It's an issue near and dear to my heart."

Re: Week 61: Cybernetics and you, 101
"Well sweetie, I could spend hours talking about how each individual cybernetic draws energy from your body and in turn enhances you. And have. But in general a cybernetic is a fusion of biological, electronic and mechanical components intergrated into your body. The extent to which each component is used varies between cybernetic companies, Gemini use way may biological components than, say, Reaver. The biological parts get energy the same way the rest of your cells do, the rest leech from those while converting the kinetic and thermal energy you exert. Usually you can simply elect to turn them off, especially with the Anascan GUI, the best HUD system. Stuff like I.C.E and your neural stabilisers not so much, since they're more nanotech with control units than regular upgrades.” As Coraline spoke her hornet droid took once more to the air and began running through a sequence of impressive show flight paths. The plague doctor herself sucked up a large amount of milkshake through a straw before continuing.
"A large enough blast of EMP shuts down the electronic part, stopping internal A.I. from accessing it and forcing the whole thing into safe mode. All those enhancements go kaput no matter how many calories you put into them. Which is why your muscles are more reliable than mine sweetie, your strength will always be there, if my arms got EMP'd I wouldn't even be able to lift this one.” Coraline held up her left arm and twisted it around, seeming unconcerned by the prospect. At this point she was firmly in full talking mode and while she gesticulated emphatically at Hugo Coraline was not hugely responsive to her audience.
“Of course you're cybernetics are pretty well wrapped up in, well, you. So it takes a lot of EMP to breach that threshold and applies to all cybernetics pretty much regardless of size. Galvanic weapons work the same way since they carry a weaker EMP on their current. Generally you can't take down cybernetics that way without delivering enough electricity to all but vaporize someone. At least without deep understanding of galvanic weapons and Una is one of a kind." Coraline reaised she had been talking nonstop for some time and grinned in apology up at Hugo. She reached for more food to cram into her face with about as much grace as she had handled her lesson.

"She is unique." There was pride in his voice about Una, and even mentioning her made him smile a little. He chugged a little more of his drink. He didn't seem to mind her talking at great lengths, and was doing his best to follow along. "Huh. So EMP shuts down the computer bits of the cybernetic. That makes sense. Though I do kinda vaporize people wirh big bolts, though."
He looked Coraline over again, smiling. "You know a lot about this. I.. dunno if I'll be able to keep up, encantadora."

"You do have a tendancy towards vaporisation, it's true," the plague doctor teased. Hugo knew she preferred something a little less destructive but there was no denying which of their weapons of choice was more effective in combat. "Well we're doing this for your eddification sweetie, so don't hesitate to stop me or ask any questions. But I get why you would feel like that, I mean the topic is so interconnected with so many other things. And I've more or less learnt as much as I can about all of them.
For example the same thing that protects your cybernetics from small EMP bursts is also why you need to do maintence and pay upkeep on cybernetics- your body. Your immune system recongises that cybernetics are a foregin entity and treats it like any invasive material. Your white blood cells attempt to break down the cybernetics particles chemically, histomine provokes swelling and your cells attempt to push them out as they grow. As an agent these are far less of a problem than they would be to regular people and minimum saftey requirements on the cybernetics themselves ensure these reactions are minimised. The constant action is a little too mcuh for a normal human's immune system though so angilesum was composed. The high price of cybernetics means that people like me are still nessecary, especially in old cities or Ai-Jinn facilities that require those horrible Tracer-Li cybernetics." Coraline shuddered at the thought. No elegance in those designs.

Hugo nodded a little, brow quirked. "It's not just old cities, though. I mean, lots of people who aren't agents get augments. It's basically a requirement if you wanna get anywhere real in weltball, or if you do any hard mining or labor, and I know my aunt really wanted to get some Kreig stuff. The anti-aging stuff. Well, hell, my aunt and uncle and dad all got them when I got paid. Plus some other stuff, my aunt got like a new heart and lungs. And my brother keeps talking about getting an internal AI, so... You know, lots of people get them." He nodded more, and looked down realizing he was already mostly finished with his lunch.
He realized he was kind of rambling, and looked at Coraline with a little smile. "So I take it you don't like the clunky cybernetics? You like the ones that look mostly human?"

Re: Week 61: Cybernetics and you, 101
Coraline had nodded seriously as Hugo spoke, it was nice to hear her concerns reflected even if Hugo focused mainly on his family. At his last comment she had to stifle a giggle. The plague doctor had been wondering how to come around to this topic and this was as good an opportunity as she was going to get"You could say that, but it would belie a talent for understatement. So, you know how I moved into Phoenix private security a few weeks back? I may have met someone and we may be dating now." Coraline smiled up a Hugo, her cheeks colouring even as she spoke. "Xiahou Hui has got to be the cutest, most gentlemanly and deliciously analytically mind I have met. And such a charmer too, you know good old fashioned lover boy style?" At this point the former plastic surgeon's smile could only be described as dopey. "He's also a replicant." She bit down on her lower lip and raised her eyebrows, eagerly anticipating the look on Hugo's face.

Hugo's reaction was somewhat muted, eyebrows raising and a little smile spreading across his face. He leaned forward, delighted, amused, confused. "How does that work, with him--" And then he instantly stopped, realized what he was saying, and laughed. Slow at first, then louder and more uproariously. It took him a few moments to calm down.
After a taking a few deep breaths, Hugo leaned back in the chair, giving Coraline a critical look. He couldn't keep the amusement from his eyes, but his expression sobered. "People don't get it when humans don't like humans. You're gonna get a whole lotta shit. From lots of people, even people you love. You like." He cleared his throat. He shrugged his shoulder, sighing and leaning forward. "But it's good? And he's nice to you?" He seemed just a tiny bit concerned.

Coraline smiled faintly, looking slightly puzzled as Hugo began and continued to laugh. The plague doctor's mouth had formed an "o" of question. Then her expression softened as Hugo spoke, very obviously from experience. Hell she practically melted, Hugo was too adorable. " It is good. And yes he is the best to me, the very best to me. We went for dinner a few weeks ago and it was just exceptional." Coraline smiled up at her friend and reached across the table for a fist bump. The hug could wait until they were both standing. "Hey I... guess I didn't realise what people had put you and Una through. You did punch at least one of them though, right?"

Hugo shrugged, fist bumping gently. He seemed a little down about the whole conversation, but was smiled at her happy detailing of her relationship. "Punch who? My Dad? My brothe--Okay, I mean, yes, I punched my brothers, but that's pretty normal. I have to explain it a lot but.. That's what happens. And you hope as many people get it as they can, and maybe, over time.. They'll get it. And if not.." He sighed, relaxing a little more. "It's weird, but it's a small price for love, you know?" The seriousness on his face broke, and he smiled sincerely.

Coraline nodded, smiling warmly and maybe a little sadly. "I do. It might be a little early to say I'm in love but I... well, I want him to be the one I go home to at the very least. Heh and a legal marriage would be a pipe dream at best. I mean, no one would look twice at you for anything in the E.I. unless you said you actually cared. Not that I'm going to let that stop us. Small price." The plague doctor settled back and finished her food, a thoughtful look on her face. "Thanks sweetie, it means a lot. I'm glad we can talk about it. Also uh, if you don't mind chatting about it I felt a little... anticipatory about being with a replicant, especially Hui. So I may have picked up some niche cybernetics." Coraline pretended to look self scandalised.

Hugo looked at Coraline blankly for a moment. Oh, he could understand about love, and the EI kind of, but... "Niche cybernetics? What.. does that mean?" He seemed kind of confused, and wondered if this was part of some test. Coraline's scandalized expression wasn't helping. His mind stretched while he thought of what she could possibly mean, but after a looong stretch of silence he gave up. "Is this some kind of like.. robot mind control thing?"

"What? No and.... technically that's a mainstream cybernetic thats for droids, so it wouldn't work on Hui anyway. But no, nothing so.... exotic. Just sex enhancements, you know prehensile tongue, that kind of thing." The former plastic surgeon looked at Hugo in bemused.... bemusement. "I didn't... really suppose someone could think of anything with more clout for that euphemism, but I suppose you're full of surprises Hugo sweetie." Coraline was clearly teasing Hugo, and began to stifle a giggle.

"Oh." Hugo relaxed slightly until he realized what Coraline just said, and then blinked. "...Oh." He grinned a little sheepishly, visibly considering her words. His tongue tapped across his teeth. Then his eyes widened as he remembered some even.. niche-ier cybernetics he had seen on the WDN. Well, parts of the WDN. Specific parts. His smile grew even wider.
"..But, wait. Why would you need more? Or is this for him? Is this like, 'Oh, hey, robot boyfriend, I got you this new dick?', like me and scopes and stuff with Una? Or what?" He was still grinning, but seemed both curious and.. slightly quiet. He extended his hand backward to touch Una's holster in an affectionate and ginger way.
